A Feminine Summer Top for Petite Figures

Today I’m sharing a new summer top sewing pattern with you. I designed this style especially for petite women, and I think it turned out to be a really feminine and easy-to-wear piece.

The special feature of this top is the shaped front with its curved, wedge-shaped center panel. The wide waist ruffle starts just above the waistline and adds a playful touch to the otherwise fitted and clean silhouette. The vertical seam lines also help create a visually elongated shape.

This top looks great in both solid and printed fabrics. If you choose a solid fabric, you could highlight the seam lines with decorative topstitching – it will make the interesting construction of the front even more noticeable. A pretty floral or other romantic print will give the top a completely different character.

A little summer styling tip

I would pair this style with simple, clean-cut bottoms. Worn with straight-leg trousers or a fitted pencil skirt, the top creates a feminine and elegant look without feeling too formal.

The top is 18 cm (7 in) long from the waist, and the ruffle starts 3 cm (1¼ in) above the waistline.

Free Sewing Pattern or Premium Version?

As with my other sewing patterns, I’ve made both a free and a premium version of this top.

The free sewing pattern will be available through my September 2026 newsletter. It contains only the layered A4 version, so I mainly recommend it for those who are already comfortable working with sewing patterns and don’t need detailed sewing instructions.

If you would like to have a detailed guide with you throughout the sewing process, I recommend the premium version. It includes everything you need in one place:

  • layered A4 PDF sewing pattern
  • layered A0 PDF sewing pattern
  • layered Projector file
  • fabric requirements
  • cutting list
  • fabric layout diagram
  • illustrated step-by-step sewing instructions
  • sewing terms glossary

The pattern is available in EU 34–42 / US 4P–12P and is designed for women 160 cm (5’3″) or under.

The premium sewing pattern is available in both my own online shop and my Etsy shop.

And if you make this top, I would love to see your version! Share a photo of your finished top and use #biansewstudio so I can find it.

Happy sewing!

Sewing Notes

Here are some essential tips for a successful sewing project:

Choosing the Right Size & Fit

  • Always choose the size based on your body measurements, not your ready-to-wear size. Check the measurement chart included with the pattern.
  • If adjustments are needed, make them before cutting the fabric. Lengthen or shorten the pattern by slashing and spreading or overlapping the pieces, securing with tape.
  • For garments, check the ease allowance in the pattern. Some designs include negative ease (smaller than body measurements) for a snug fit, while others have extra room for comfort.

Fabric Recommendations

  • Choose a fabric that matches the pattern’s suggested stretch percentage (e.g., 50% stretch means 10 cm fabric should stretch to 15 cm).
  • Fabrics with poor recovery (not bouncing back after stretching) can result in wavy seams or a stretched-out garment. To prevent this, select a knit fabric with spandex/Lycra content.
  • Preshrink your fabric by washing and drying it the same way you will care for the finished project.

Cutting & Preparation

  • Iron your fabric before cutting to remove any creases. Use the correct heat setting based on the fiber content (low heat for synthetics, high heat for natural fibers).
  • When placing pattern pieces, ensure the grainline is parallel to the fabric selvage to maintain the correct drape.
  • Cut small, precise notches (about 1/8” or 0.3 cm) to avoid weakening the seam allowances.

Sewing & Finishing

  • Use a stretch or ballpoint needle for knit fabrics to avoid skipped stitches. If stitches are skipping, try a slightly larger needle size.
  • If seams appear wavy, try using a walking foot or adjusting the differential feed on an overlocker.
  • Use a stretch stitch or zigzag stitch to maintain flexibility in the seams. If seams crack under stress, check the stitch type and use polyester thread instead of cotton.
  • When pressing seams, lift the iron between sections instead of gliding it to prevent stretching out the fabric.

By following these guidelines, you’ll achieve a professional-looking finish and a well-fitting garment or accessory. Happy sewing! 🧵✂️
