Beginner’s Sewing Handbook – Part 2

Taking Measurements - A Beginner’s Guide to a Perfect Fit

Choosing the right size is one of the most important steps in sewing a garment that truly fits and feels great. While ready-to-wear sizes can vary wildly, sewing gives you the power to tailor your clothes to your unique body — but only if you start with accurate measurements.

In this post, you’ll learn how to take your body measurements correctly and how to choose the right size based on the size chart provided with the sewing pattern.

🧍‍♀️ Before You Begin

  • Wear only underwear or thin clothing when measuring.

  • Stand naturally — don’t hold your breath or suck in your tummy!

  • Ask someone to help, or measure yourself in front of a mirror for accuracy.

  • Use a soft, flexible measuring tape (not a metal one!).

📐 Key Measurements

1. Bust

Measure around the fullest part of your bust, making sure the tape stays straight across your back.

2. Waist

Find your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso — and wrap the tape snugly around it, without pulling tight.

3. Hip

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom.

🔢 Choosing the Right Size

  • Use the size chart included with the pattern to compare your measurements.

  • If you fall between two sizes, go with the larger one — it’s easier to take in a garment than to let it out!

  • Keep in mind that not all patterns use the same sizing system — always check the specific chart included.

✂️ A Note About Ease

Some sewing patterns include wearing ease (extra space for comfort) or design ease (for a specific silhouette, like a loose blouse or a fitted dress). That means your finished garment might be slightly bigger than your body measurements — on purpose!

Check the pattern instructions for guidance on how the final piece is meant to fit.

🟡 Tip

📌 Take new measurements every few months. Our bodies change — and that’s okay!
📌 Write your measurements down in a sewing notebook or keep them in your phone.
📌 Always double-check before cutting into your fabric.

By learning to measure yourself accurately, you’re already setting the stage for sewing clothes that truly fit — and feel amazing to wear. This simple skill will boost your confidence and give you the freedom to create garments that reflect your body, your style, and your story.

Let’s keep going — you’ve got this! 💛
